Editorial design for people with and without visual impairment

Working closely with the German Federation of the Blind and Partially Sighted (DBSV), adlerschmidt designed leserlich.info, an online resource for inclusive communication design. The design recommendations produced during the project were the foundation for developing a new look for the DBSV’s members’ magazine, Sichtweisen (Ways of Seeing).
The partial concealment of the individual letters in the magazine’s name references sight loss, while the dots create associations with braille. Rather than hiding from the issue of visual impairment, the new design confidently puts it front and centre.

The magazine also features a vibrant colour scheme that – in addition to the pictogram family developed especially for the magazine – helps to clearly organize and differentiate the individual sections. The colour scheme continues inside the magazine.

To make the layout clear and straightforward, the magazine uses elements such as dividing lines and colourful icons to guide reading. The typeface Neue Frutiger 1450, which was especially optimised for directional systems and features pronounced distinguishing features for each letter and a larger font size, makes for extremely readable text.
